Mission Statement
Violet is an open access club attracting a friendly mixed crowd. Our plan is to give punters the opportunity to 'do it themselves' and as such there are no 'resident DJ's' or music policy rules. The sort of music that will be played depends on who has requested to DJ and to date we have given the decks at Retro Bar over to 16 first-time DJ's. We also encourage our DJ's to come up with themed nights and so far we have had tributes to Kurt & Courtney, David Bowie (Life on Mars?) and Placebo (Black Eyed).
In 2005 we took the next logical step and invited our DJ's to run their own nights in place of Club Violet. This worked out really well and hopefully some of the nights will continue to run independently. It has also been great for me to step back and see other people really get into organising and promoting their own nights, not to mention getting to hear loads of different music getting played!
In 2006 and beyond we are going to do further Life on Mars? nights and might set about planning some other 'alternative' events if the mood strikes!
We are always looking for local talent to take to our stage and so far electro-pop singer Heaton, performance poet Dominic Berry, Manchester band One Window, Huddersfield's finest female fronted rockers Mary Jane and Leeds based queer duo Jean Genet have performed. As a performer you can guestlist as many of your friends as you like and if enough people pay entry on the night you may even get paid for your services!
